CPAUG July 30th Meeting

I must preface this post by stating, “I suck at remembering names.”

So having said that…

Abloatbe? Bloatdobe? Adobloatme?

Sometimes I wonder where Adobe plans to lead the ubiquitous SWF file and its associated software. Hopefully it will never be as “BLOATED” as Adobe’s PDF Viewer.

Adobe Reader‘s large file size seems a bit excessive when you consider the fact that most PDFs can be “printed” to SWF files which in turn can be viewed with the comparatively minuscule SWF player.

Flex Builder 3 First Impression

If you read my previous article Flex 3 Released you’d know that I was lucky enough to win a free copy of Flex Builder 3 at the February CPAUG meeting. I’m not sure why, but Adobe chose to send a boxed version of Flex Builder to all of the winners rather than e-mailing them a key-code for a downloaded copy. Oh well, that’s okay by me, I’m not really in a rush to try Flex and I wouldn’t mind having an installation disc around ‘just in case’ I ever need it.

After a couple weeks, my prize from Adobe finally arrived via Fed-Ex. I promptly stripped it from it’s bubble-wrapped confines and marveled at its splendor. Safely nestled within the Fed-Ex package was a shiny white box which contained another more cleverly shaped box which held yet another plastic box. Ooooo (pronounced the way you’d say it if you were watching a fireworks display) this was SO worth the wait!

Beating the Chat Noir Kitty

The game called Chat Noir, which can be found in my Ten Fun Flash Games article, was driving Wilhelm crazy so I thought I’d show him that the “frickin cat” can indeed be boxed.

Downgrading from Adobe CS3

I’ve written about Flash CS3 wasting screen space and Flash CS3 dropping PDF file import features but my humble little articles didn’t receive much attention. Well, today I read that the creator of WordPress, Matt Mullenweg, (i.e. a bigshot) has abandoned DreamWeaver CS3 and gone back to using DreamWeaver 8. Not only that, but many of his blog readers have done or will do the same.

Of course I realize that one other blog post doesn’t necessarily validate all my criticisms of CS3 but I find it consoling to know I’m not the only one to balk at the latest incarnation of Adobe’s CS3 tools.

Why do I think this is important? This is similar to

Adobe PDF and Flash CS3 “Integration”

Here are two direct quotes from Adobe’s web site…

  1. PDF: “Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) lets you capture and view robust information—from any application, on any computer system—and share it with anyone around the world.”
  2. CS3: “Revolutionary integration – in editions for web, design, and video, and the all encompassing Master Collection – means you can flow across and within applications, in virtually any medium.”

So riddle me this my caped Flashers… Why can’t Flash CS3 import a PDF file? Flash 8 could import PDF files

High Performance AS3 3D Ornaments

as3-3d-ornaments.jpg

I was reading Neatorama today when I saw a SWF file which I’ll call Ornaments (since it’s getting to be that time of year).

I tried to learn more about the file and its author but the page featuring Ornaments is written in Japanese and the BabelFish translation didn’t really provide much more insight. Whoever created the Ornaments file sure knows their stuff.

It starts out with 512 ornaments/particles rearranging to form various geometric configurations as the camera flies around to show it all off. You can click and drag inside the SWF to affect the camera view and you can make it a bit more interesting by pressing the plus sign to add more particles. I got to about 5,000 ornaments before it was a little choppy.
