Context Search Plugin for FireFox

Results from a previous poll indicate that very few PixelWit.com visitors use a toolbar when browsing. I don’t use one either, but there’s one FireFox plugin that I absolutely have to have. It’s called Context Search and I like it so much that it’s the first FireFox plugin that I reinstall after a catastrophic hard drive failure. 😉 This simple little (9k) tool helps you easily research terms found within a web page.

Here’s how it works, let’s say you’re minding your own business, reading your favorite blog, when all of a sudden, WHAM! you run into an unfamiliar word like “apoptosis”. Quick, what do you do?

Feed Reading Options

After reading my last article, you might think that I’ve abandoned reading RSS feeds altogether due to my concern with “shadowy librarian spies” but that’s definitely not the case. In fact I have quick, easy and anonymous access to a comprehensive list of Flash feeds ready to read the very moment I feel the urge to monitor the Flash-O-Sphere’s heartbeat. All I have to do is Read Somebody Else’s Feeds. That particular feed list happens to belong to Neil Webb and I have to admit, it covers just about everything I’m interested in and a good deal more.

One of the best aspects of reading other people’s feeds is that you don’t even have to lift a finger to create or maintain the list and the web interface is so simple all you have to do is point and click, no tagging, sorting, or signing-up is required… simple and easy, the way the web was meant to be. 😉

Of course there is a downside

Text Link Ads Marginally Improved

Shortly after writing my previous article Text Link Ads Needs Improvement which documents my poor experience with Text Link Ads (TLA) I received a generic e-mail from them which explained that, as a current member of TLA, I was invited to try their new ad program. A new ad program? I guess they thought they were doing so well that it was time to branch out and repeat their failures in new markets.

Anyway, the thing I found most interesting about the e-mail from TLA was that it was signed by the president of TLA himself AND it listed his e-mail address. Hmmm… maybe the President would like to hear about my less than stellar experience with his company. So I wrote him a letter

WordPress Plugin Installer

The WordPress plugin called “PlugInstaller” by H.R. Schaefer is an excellent concept come to fruition. PlugInstaller makes installing a plugin as easy as pointing to a web address (or a file on your hard drive) and pressing the “install” button. You no longer need to download, decompress, upload and activate your plugins. It turns a 4-step multi-application process into a one-click-command issued from the WordPress user interface. Pretty nice. But wait there’s more!

Image Gallery Plugin Recommendation

As a follow up to my previous post WordPress Image Gallery Gotchas I thought I’d let you know what image gallery software I’m currently using. As you may recall, I tried combining Gallery2 (a full featured open source image gallery) with WPG2 (a WordPress plugin to place Gallery2 inside your blog) but I didn’t have much success so I began reconsidering my options.

I went to the WordPress Plugins page, then went to the Images Plugins section and browsed through all their offerings. Here’s my list of top contenders and my impression of each one:

WordPress Image Gallery Gotchas

I’ve been considering various open source image gallery solutions for my WordPress blog but I couldn’t decide which one would best meet my needs. Heck, I wasn’t even sure what my needs were so I decided a bit of research was in order. The most helpful information I found was an Image Plugin article on Lorelle’s site where she discusses the most common and popular solutions for working with images in a WordPress blog. After reading her post and many of the articles linked within it I decided I’d install Gallery2 and the WPG2 plugin to get the most powerful and flexible system while maintaining modularity and simplicity. At least that was what I was hoping for.

WordPress Plugin Recommendation (June)

It’s been a while since my last WordPress Plugin Recommendation so I thought I’d let you know how much of a “Plugin Ho” I’ve become since then. I’m currently using 32 WordPress plugins! Sure, it seems like a lot when you put an exclamation mark at the end, but I need each ‘n every one of ’em I tells ya, honest. In fact, I have so many plugins that I need a plugin to help me review them all. Here’s my list of currently installed plugins, each accompanied by a brief review:
